University of Ģý named an Alberta Top Employer for fifth consecutive year

With the contributions, achievements and dedication of more than 6,000 employees on five campuses across two countries, the University of Ģý is one of  for the fifth year running.

With the vast range of job titles at the university — from hazardous materials handler to multivariable calculus professor, administrative assistant to library technician — UĢý is a web of talent, diversity and innovation.

President Ed McCauley says he has seen first-hand over the last 30 years, the incredible commitment, skill and passion that employees bring to their work each day.

“The University of Ģý culture reflects the character of our accomplished trailblazers, change-makers and innovators,” McCauley says. “UĢý’s people have built up a supportive and inclusive community with room for everyone to thrive.”

In 2018, more than 3,250 employers began the Top Employer application process to prove their quality in eight key categories, including:

  • physical workplace
  • work atmosphere and social
  • health, financial and family benefits
  • vacation and time off
  • employee communications
  • performance management
  • training and skills development
  • community involvement

UĢý’s Indigenous Strategy — ii’ taa’ poh’ to’ p, a Blackfoot name meaning “a place to rejuvenate and re-energize during a journey” — provided an opportunity in 2018 for the university to take an important and meaningful step on the path towards reconciliation to reset, revisit, and revitalize its relationship with Indigenous communities throughout the region

In February 2018, hundreds of students, faculty and staff attended A Story to Hear, celebrating the Campus Mental Health Strategy’s second year of progress. The keynote speech was delivered by Canadian entrepreneur and philanthropist Frank O’Dea, who shared his personal journey of resiliency and highlighted the importance of mental health initiatives. On-campus organizations hosted a Wellness Fair to distribute mental health resources and information.
UĢý recognizes the importance of thanking employees for the great contributions they make. Three seasons a year for the last 27 years, Campus Security workers pedal their way through the University of Ģý's bustling pathways and roadways, ensuring the safety of students, faculty, staff and visitors. The Ģý Pride Parade continues to grow and engage more and more people every year. More than 800 UĢý students, faculty and staff and more than 300 online viewers came together at the 2018 Community Report event to celebrate an amazing year.
The UFlourish program helps build positive mental health and personal resilience at the University of Ģý. Each year, students, faculty and staff are encouraged to participate in various activities, including a Wellness Fair, where they can drop in to speak to health and wellness professionals, learn about campus and community resources and visit informational and interactive booths.
