The Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Lynn Cornell, MD, as the new academic head of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. The appointment is effective July 1, 2026.

As we welcome Dr. Cornell, we’d like to thank Dr. Hallgrimur Benediktsson, MD, for his service as acting head from November 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026.

Dr. Cornell is a professor with the departments of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine and Medicine at CSM and an anatomical pathologist with Alberta Precision Laboratories. As a medical renal pathologist, Dr. Cornell has clinical and research interests in kidney transplant pathology, interstitial nephritis, and IgG4-related disease.

Prior to joining the University of Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ last year, Dr. Cornell dedicated many years to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, where she was a professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology. Notably, she founded the Clinic’s renal pathology fellowship program and served as the program director from 2012 to 2025.

Dr. Cornell received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She completed medical school at the University of Minnesota, followed by anatomic and clinical pathology residency and renal pathology fellowship training at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Cornell has received two major awards from the Renal Pathology Society: the Gloria Gallo Research Award, recognizing significant research contributions by a mid-career investigator (2015), and the Jacob Churg Award for major contributions to the field of renal pathology (2026). She was named a Fellow of the American Society of Transplantation and the American Society of Nephrology in 2023.
