Unit Inspections - What You Need To Know
Residence Services conducts unit inspections once per semester to help maintain safe, healthy and well-maintained living environments throughout residence.
These inspections allow us to identify potential housekeeping, maintenance and safety concerns before they become larger issues. They also help us ensure residence facilities, furnishings and life safety systems remain in good condition for all residents. Inspections are conducted in accordance with the Residence Services Agreement.
You do not need to be present while your unit is being inspected. If you are aware of any maintenance concerns before your inspection, please submit a maintenance request through the residence maintenance system.
How You Can Help
Preparing for an inspection is simple.
We understand your unit is a lived-in space and do not expect it to be spotless. Taking a few minutes to tidy common areas, remove garbage, put away personal belongings, and ensure shared spaces are reasonably clean helps staff complete the inspection efficiently.
If you notice any maintenance concerns prior to your inspection, please submit a maintenance request through the residence maintenance system. If you have already submitted a request, no additional action is required. Residence Services staff will take existing maintenance reports into consideration during the inspection.
Residents can also help by ensuring furniture remains in good condition, pathways and exits are clear, and smoke detectors, appliances, and other residence fixtures remain accessible for inspection.
What We Inspect
During an inspection, Residence Services staff may review:
- General housekeeping and cleanliness of shared spaces
- Kitchens, washrooms and other common areas
- Residence furniture and fixtures
- Smoke detectors and other safety devices
- Lighting, switches and electrical fixtures
- Appliances to ensure they are clean and functioning properly
- Plumbing concerns, leaks or signs of water damage
- Walls, floors, doors and other surfaces for excessive damage
- Unit exits and pathways to ensure they remain accessible
- General maintenance concerns that may require follow-up
After the Inspection
Most inspections are completed quickly and without issue.
If concerns are identified related to the cleanliness, condition, or maintenance of your unit, your Residence Life Coordinator (RLC) may contact you to discuss the outstanding concerns and any next steps. They will work with you to address the issues and support you in ensuring your unit meets residence expectations.
Depending on the nature of the concerns, a follow-up inspection may be required. If concerns remain unresolved, additional actions may be taken in accordance with the Residence Services Agreement.
If Residence Services identifies maintenance concerns that have not yet been reported, we may submit a maintenance request on your behalf to help ensure the issue is addressed.
If you have any questions about unit inspections, please connect with your Community Advisor (CA) or Residence Life Coordinator (RLC).
